چکیده انگلیسی:Background: developing astudent'ssenseofcapability,purpose,resourcefulness,identityandconnect-
edness (five-sensesofsuccess) arekeyfactorsthatmaybeimportantinpredictingstudentsatisfactionand
progressionwithintheiruniversityprogram.
Aim: the studyaimedtoexaminetheexpectationsandexperiencesofsecondandthirdyearmidwifery
students enroledinaBachelorofMidwiferyprogramandidentifybarriersandenablerstosuccess.
Method: a descriptiveexploratoryqualitativedesignwasused.Fifty-sixstudentsenroledineitheryear
2 or3oftheBachelorofMidwiferyprograminSEQueenslandparticipatedinananonymoussurvey
using open-endedquestions.Inaddition,16studentsparticipatedintwoyear-levelfocusgroups.
Templateanalysis,usingtheFiveSensesFramework,wasusedtoanalysethedataset.
Findings: earlyexposureto ‘hands on’ clinical midwiferypracticeaswellascontinuityofcare
experiencesprovidedstudentswithanopportunitytolinktheorytopracticeandincreasedtheir
perceptionofcapabilityastheytransitionedthroughtheprogram.Student'ssenseofidentity,purpose,
resourcefulness,andcapabilitywasstronglyinfluenced bytheprogramsembeddedmeta-values,
including a ‘woman centred’ approach. Inaddition,astudent'sabilitytoformstrongpositiverelation-
ships withwomen,peers,lecturersandsupportiveclinicianswascentraltodevelopingconnectionsand
ultimatelyasenseofsuccess.Asenseofconnectionnotonlyfosteredanongoingbeliefthatchallenges
could beovercomebutthatstudents'themselvescouldinitiateorinfluence change.
Conclusions: the five sensesframeworkprovidedausefullensthroughwhichtoanalysethestudent
experience.KeyfactorstostudentsatisfactionandretentionwithinaBachelorofMidwiferyprogram
include: aclearlyarticulatedmidwiferyphilosophy,strategiestopromotestudentconnectedness
including theuseofsocialmedia,andfurtherdevelopmentofclinician'sskillsinpreceptorship,clinical
teaching andfacilitation.Programdeliverymethodsandstudentsupportsystemsshouldbedesignedto
enable maximum flexibilitytopromotecapabilityandresourcefulnessandembedsenseofpurposeand
identity earlyintheprogram.
